Task Master

Most might think of a designer as an off-the-cuff individual who is oozing with creativity, floating through the days letting inspiration guide the way. My guess is that the majority of budding designers perceive the profession in the same way, and I must admit that I was similarly unenlightened not so long ago.

Here’s the reality check — design is hard work, mentally and emotionally. There is a lot of planning, research, and scheduling that goes on behind the scenes. How does one juggle the creative with the… not so creative? I’ve been searching for the best tool to help me get tackle tasks and stay organized. After testing many apps, I have determined a favorite — for now. I’m basing my decision on ease of use, cost, and UI features.

  1. Things: One-time $50 for the desktop version, unless you want the iPad ($20) and iPhone ($10) apps also. I like the functionality and overall ease of use for this app. Includes projects, tagging, sorting, etc. My one gripe is that syncing must be done over wi-fi, but it hasn’t proven to be an issue for me yet.
  2. Action Method: $12 per month. Has several good features, good UI. I think that I mainly didn’t want to pay $100 per year to use it.
  3. Intervals: $20 per month Basic fee. Has a lot of reporting and time tracking. More useful for overall project management, Not for organizing daily to-do items. .
  4. Paprika: $5 per month. I like the simple text based entry, but it’s not as robust as I need it to be. Project tagging is buggy.
  5. Wunderlist: Free. Features are lacking. Has “lists”, but not “projects” that can be archived.

Is there anything better out there that is low-cost and enjoyable to use?

Color and Shape

One of my goals for the year is to push my creative boundaries and try some new design approaches. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?

Last night I worked on a little pattern experiment using shape and color. Overall, I like the layering and slight discord caused by the misalignment.
